09:46 am - Phallic birthday cake
...and boy, is it ever. Posting mostly for [info]tragerstreit's amusement, but the rest of y'all will appreciate it as well.

LJ entry here. In case the photo has exceeded its bandwidth allotment when you go to look, I've copied it here.

(As if you have to ask: no, this is not work-safe. Unless you work at Good Vibes or something. Link via [info]darkmoon.)

Okay, folks, I'll see your political spectrum test, and raise you both a Nerd/Geek/Dork test *and*, just because it's really funny, a "How Fucked By Bush Are You?" test.

08:58 am - Saved by [info]heartspunmom!
[info]heartspunmom has set up a LJ account which syndicates from my blog via RSS. So if you have a note from your doctor excusing you from excessive mouse-clicking, you can add [info]timestream to your friends list, and then there can be two separate sets of comments for every post I write! (=

(Note, however, that while Wordpress supports a cut tag very similar to <lj-cut>, it's not identical, so cuts won't work on your friends pages. Hopefully your doctor will understand that scrolling and clicking don't use the same muscles...)

05:47 pm - He's Baaaaack...
I don't know about you, but I've missed my hideous lime-on-black color scheme.

Well, miss it no more: as of today, I'm moving my blogging activities back to their permanent (well, permanent for the 'net, anyway) home at http://timestream.net/nonsequitur/. Things may move around slightly as I figure out how to exert my Godlike Powers of Code-Fu and make them look exactly the way I want. (Yes, it's true; I didn't bother to write my own this time. I'm using Wordpress, which is Pretty Darn Cool.)

I've imported all of my old posts from the original blog, as well as all of the posts I've made here on LJ since I took the blog down in August. (Holy crap, I used LJ for six months?) At the moment, I haven't imported any of the old comments; this may or may not prove to be worth doing -- but I do still have them lying around, waiting to be dug up and used against y'all. ;>

Also note: for the time being, it looks like the plugin that's supposed to synchronize posts between Wordpress and LJ doesn't work. So while I may come back to your friends pages when that's updated, for the time being, you'll have to make the Herculean effort of clicking on a separate link (the horror!). I hope you're up to the task. (=

07:46 pm - Read Banned Books!
As swiped from [info]museumgirl:

Here is a list of the top 110 banned books (of all time). Bold the ones you’ve read. Italicize the ones you’ve read part of. Underline the ones you specifically want to read (at least some of) [I'm not going to do this; if it's a book, assume that I'll want to read it...]. Read more. Convince others to read some. Note that these are or have been banned in American schools.

Hardcore geekitude here: animation of insertions into an AVL tree.

[EDIT: And this interactive Java-based one is pretty cool, too.]

08:18 pm - Blogger Bingo
After class the other day, my classmate Chris was talking about writing a blogging board game. For example, "Blog about burnt toast -- move back five squares!"

This inspired me to update Bullshit Bingo for blogging. Feel free to add to this list!

  1. picture of cat
  2. post about food just eaten (unless it's a food blog)
  3. post about not posting
  4. post about quitting blogging altogether
  5. post about taking up blogging again after quitting publicly
  6. gap between posts of more than 2 weeks
  7. no gap between posts of more than 6 hours
  8. multiple cut tags in one post (LJ-specific)
  9. "What kind of X am I?" quiz
  10. "generator" quiz (e.g., the hobbit name generator)
  11. quiz that randomly puts friends' names in wacky situations
  12. post as email (e.g., "hey, Jane, what time are we meeting up again?")
  13. link in post to online petition
  14. button on page to online petition
  15. ribbon of any color
  16. animated GIF
  17. IM acronym used in a post (e.g., AFK or BRB)
  18. "mood: horny"
  19. list meme
  20. comment meme
  21. hehe
  22. emoticon
  23. post about parenting

06:25 pm - The Plunge
Well, after testing the waters with two other domains, I'm moving timestream.net to its new web host. Email shouldn't be dropped (though if it goes to the new host before I can see it, it might be delayed briefly), but for the next few days, if anyone needs to get through to me fast, use the GMail account.

Also, my new host has Wordpress available as a one-click install. Looks cool enough that I might not bother writing my own this time -- so I might not be showing up on LJ soon (though it looks like there are some plugins that support cross-posting, so this may well still work).

And now -- homework!

03:31 pm - They Even Fooled Me
Reading through my psychology textbook, in the chapter on human visual perception, there's a ton of fascinating stuff. But the part that might possibly have amused me the most was this:

"The context in which something appears often guides people's perceptual hypotheses. [...] The power of expectations explains why typographocal errors like those in this sentance often pass unoberved (Lachman, 1996)."
(There are three errors. I had to read the sentence a few times to spot them all, although the middle error jumped out at me right away, since I see that kind of error most frequently.)

06:01 pm - Bwaha!
I finally got around to emailing the administrator at my old web host to see if he might still have a backup copy of the database that had my old blog in it. Luckily, he did -- so I once again have access to three years' worth of blogorrhea. I *think* this is a good thing. (=

01:11 am - BLEORGH.
I am sick. With the same [nasty cold | polite flu] that was making [info]fawnapril feel crappy about 12-24 hours ahead of me.

Worse, I can't sleep. I took a bunch of TranQuil and went semiconscious for about two hours, then woke up and lay there sniffling and coughing and thinking about web sites and command prompts, until finally I gave up and here I am. Yay.

I take some small comfort in the fact that [info]fawnapril reports feeling much better after just one day of ook.

My iPod Shuffle (512MB) arrived today. It's very cute. Being unable to think of anything better, I named it 'do_not_eat'.

03:51 pm - Email
I appear to be receiving email at my usual address again. (Of course, I never did hear back from my hosting provider, so I have no idea whether this was due to cosmic rays or their efforts.)

That is all. (=

08:49 pm - Market Segment
Searching for a new webhost (still haven't heard back from my current host as to why my email isn't working; this sucks), I ran across geekhosting.com. They got a lot of mileage just out of the name, but they're actually offering a decent deal for my budget. (= (Translation: I am a sucker, and can be marketed to if you just use the magic "G" word.)

Since I'm posting anyway, does anybody have hosting recommendations they'd like to share -- keeping in mind that I actually own 5 separate domains right now? (One could be parked on top of another if need be, lowering the count to 4.)

06:04 pm - When Technology Goes Bad
I had yet another frustrating experience with Zope this morning, which prompted an email vent and a reconsideration of my choice of platforms. This morning, I'd also sent a query in to the support address of our Zope web host to see if I could access the server using DAV (also known as WebDAV). Here's the rest of the exchange:

[Helpful support tech] We don't have DAV enabled for the Zope servers, I'm afraid.

[offers a special rate on Zope hosting for my personal website, still beyond my budget]

--

[Sam] Hm. I'll pass on the hosting offer. I'm probably going to abandon my efforts to learn Zope; it sucks me in by making easy things seem easy, but then when I try to make them do what I actually want, I run afoul of the [utter lack of] documentation. PHP may be like trying to run a race in leg irons, but at least the course is relatively straight and well-lit.

Thanks for the quick reply anyway, though.

--

[Helpful support tech] My sentiments are similar, with regards to development under Zope.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Sounds pretty clear to me... PHP, here I come... again. ("Walkin' down the only road I've ever known..." NO! BAD '80s hair rock! BAD! NO COCAINE!)

Um, 'scuse me.

Turns out LJ probably didn't stop sending me comment notification -- no, turns out my domain isn't receiving email. In the meantime, use my gmail.com account (geeksam).
